Sustainable Groceries & Zero Waste Shops

Right here at Leeds Beckett Students’ Union, you’ll find Shop Zero, a student-led zero waste refill station on City Campus. Simply bring your own container and fill it up to see how much you can save by buying dried food items in bulk. Shop Zero offers a range of produce, like pasta, rice, legumes and loads more! If you ever find yourself in Kirkgate Market, you’ve got to check out Adam & Eco! You don’t want to miss this market stall comprised of some of the best natural soaps, shampoo and conditioner bars with no plastic, palm oil, SLS or parabens.

Another amazing zero waste shop located in Chapel Allerton is The Refilling Station. With loads of products to choose from, this shop has got your household, personal care and pantry sorted. Check them out online here if you don’t feel like making the journey!

Sustainable fashion and thrifting

There are many ways you can save your money and the environment through sustainable shopping! Buying from second hand sites such as eBay or Vinted for clothes and other accessories is probably the best and cheapest way to stop clothes from going to landfill.

Another way to shop sustainably without going online is through charity and vintage stores. There are many thrift and charity shops ranging in price and style around Leeds, from Blue Rinse to the British Heart Foundation and loads more. They’re a great place to search for pre-loved wardrobe staples that won’t break the bank, and going thrifting is a fun day out!

A site that many people forget about is Facebook Marketplace. It’s perfect for finding hidden gems within your area that you can either pick up or get delivered. Whether you’re searching for a new nightstand for your student house or keeping an eye out for a great piece of knitwear, there’s loads out there!

The great thing about sites like eBay, Vinted and Facebook Marketplace is that you can also resell any of your unwanted items, from tech to jewellery and clothes. Don’t forget to resell instead of throwing out, as it’s a good way to earn some extra cash and clean out your home whilst reducing waste!
